WBCの活躍で世界に名を轟かせた侍たち。

　準々決勝の記者会見で、MLB.comの記者が、「なぜ日本はこんなにも投手が育つのか？」と栗山監督に質問を投げていたのも印象的だった。

　そこで、アメリカ語学留学中の元オリックス投手・鈴木優がup-and-comingなパ・リーグの選手たちを、毎回1名フォーカスし、英語と日本語で紹介していく。

　初回は日本球界のエース、オリックス・山本由伸投手。

　最速159km/hを記録する右腕はストレートだけでなくフォーク、カーブ、カットボール、シュート、スライダーと精度の高い多彩な変化球を操る。

　またNPB史上初となる2年連続の最優秀防御率投手賞、勝率第一位投手賞、最多勝利投手賞、最多奪三振投手賞、最多完封投手賞の五冠を達成し沢村栄治賞を受賞するなど、いまの日本球界では実力、成績共に文句のつけようがない選手だ。

　彼はメジャー志向を公言しており、近々メジャーに渡ることが予想される。

　そんな彼はまだ24歳で年齢も若い。

　メジャーリーグへのポスティング移籍となれば過去最高額レベルの移籍金になる可能性もあるだろう。

　そんな山本投手とは5年間一緒にオリックスでプレーしたが、身近で感じた彼の凄さについて書いていきたい。

　まずひとつ目は山本投手の野球を楽しむという姿勢だ。

　プロ野球は表向きには華やかな世界に見えるが、その裏では結果を出すために毎日ハードなトレーニングや練習を重ねる。

　その中で結果が上手く出ない時期などがあると、なかなか楽しむということができなくなる選手が多いと思うのだが、彼はいつも楽しむ姿勢を忘れないように見えた。

　ある意味野球を始めたての子どものように取り組んでいるようだ。

　私が現役をしていた中で1番大事で難しいと思ったところはここの要素で、どんなにピンチな場面でも楽しんでワクワクできるメンタルを保つこと。

　それを実現できているところが彼のひとつ目の凄さであり、ここまで成績を残せている要素だと思う。

　そしてふたつ目が毎日自分が決めたトレーニングを必ずやり切れるところ。

　自分が選手の時、大変だったのが同じことを毎日コツコツと続けること。

　長いシーズン中だと今日は疲れてるからいいかなとか、なにかと理由をつけてやらない日を作ろうとしてしまう。

　それを山本投手は全く怠ることなく、どんなときでも実行する。自分が決めたことをやり通す力というのはメジャーリーグに行ったとしても必ず成功できる要素になるのだと思う。

　そして最後が山本投手の人間性。

　彼は入団してからこの結果を残している現在まで全く変わることがない。

　8年間現役をしたなかで、結果を残すと他人を見下すような発言をしてしまったりする選手を残念ながら何人も見てきた。山本由伸投手は全くそれがない。

　またコミュニケーションもすごく上手で打ち解けることが早くできる選手だと思う。

　メジャーリーグに行く上でここは特に重要な要素だと思っていて、日本語が通じない新たな環境に行き、その環境で溶け込めるかどうかは人間性が大きな部分になると思う。

　そこで違う要素のストレスを抱えるようなことがあればプレーにも少なからず影響することは想像に容易い。移籍してもすぐに溶け込んでいる様子が想像できるのが彼の凄さだと思う。
　
　実力的にももちろん通用する可能性が高いと思うのだが、この記事に書いたとおり人間性の部分でも異なる環境に行っても活躍できる要素を持ち合わせていると思う。

　そんな山本投手がメジャーリーグで活躍することを心から願っている。

Yu Suzuki recommends Japanese Pacific League players for the U.S.

The Samurai have made a name for themselves around the world with their success in the WBC.
At a press conference during the quarterfinals, an MLB.com reporter asked manager Kuriyama, "Why does Japan have such a good Pitcher?"

I will focus on one coming up player from the Japanese Pacific League each time and introduce him in English and Japanese.The goal(?) is to get MLB scouts and foreign media to take notice.

In the first installment, we will focus on Yoshinobu Yamamoto, the ace of the Japanese baseball league.

The right-hander, with a top speed of 159 km/h, can handle a variety of pitches with high accuracy, including a forkball, curve, cutter, 2 seam, and slider, in addition to a 4 seam.He is the first person in NPB history the Best Defensive Pitcher Award, the Pitcher of the Year Award for the highest winning percentage, the Pitcher of the Year Award for the most wins, the Pitcher of the Year Award for the most strikeouts, and the Pitcher of the Year Award for the most complete games, and he also won the Sawamura Eiji Award.He has stated his desire to play in the major leagues, and is expected to move to the majors in the near future.

He is still young at only 24 years old.If he were to be transferred to Major League Baseball, the transfer fee could be one of the highest in history.

I played with Yamamoto for five years with the Orix Buffaloes.I would like to write about his greatness that I felt close to him.

The first is his attitude of enjoying baseball.
On the surface, professional baseball appears to be a glamorous world, but behind the scenes, hard workouts and practices are repeated every day in order to produce results.Many players lose the ability to enjoy baseball when results are not good, but Yamamoto always seemed to have an attitude of enjoying himself.

In a sense, he was like a child who had just started playing baseball.The most important and difficult part of my active career was this element: to maintain a mentality of having fun and being excited no matter how much of a pinch you may be in.

I think the fact that he is able to achieve this is the first great thing about him, and it is the element that has allowed him to achieve this level of success.

The second is that he always completes the training he decides to do every day.When I was an athlete, I found it difficult to keep doing the same thing day after day.During a long season, I would try to make a day when I would not work out for some reason, like I was too tired today.

Yamamoto never neglects to do this, and he does it at any time.I believe that this ability to follow through on what he decides to do will be a factor in his success in the major leagues.

And last but not least, Yamamoto's humanity.He has not changed at all from the time he joined the team until now, when he has achieved these results.Unfortunately, in my eight years, I have seen many players who, when they achieve good results, talk down to others.Yamamoto is not like that at all.

I also think he is a very good communicator and is able to open up quickly.I think this is an especially important factor when you are going to the MLB, and whether or not you can fit in in a new environment where Japanese is not spoken is a big part of your human qualities.It is easy to imagine that if he has to deal with the stress of different elements there, it will have no small effect on his performance.

If he were to move to a new environment, I think it would be amazing to see how quickly he would blend in.

I think there is a high possibility that he could be a good player, but as I wrote in this article, I think he also has the human qualities that would allow him to be successful in a different environment.
　
I sincerely hope that Yamamoto will be able to move to the major leagues and play an active role.
