Seibu 's second-round draft pick outfielder, Seiya Watanabe, practiced defense at third base on the 11th, the second day of fall practice.
After practicing agility and running, he headed to third base with an infield defense that he borrowed from Takamatsu. He apologized in advance to left-handed pitcher Sumida, who happened to be passing by, saying, "Sorry if I make a lot of errors, Sumida!" He then received about 10 minutes of practice from infield defense and base running coach Ohiki.
In his first season this season, he played in 109 games as a left fielder and designated hitter, with 110 hit 12 Home Run, 43 RBI, and a batting average of .259. This is the first time he has played third defense since his fourth year at university. It is merely a trial run during the autumn practice period when there is plenty of time, but he said, "The way I see it is not that different (from left field), but in infield there are a lot of low hit balls, so if I think of it as outfield, my hips get higher and my glove comes out from above. I'm still not quite good at taking the infield steps, but I think it will broaden my range as a player, so I want to work on it positively."
Attention is also focused on whether he will win the Rookie of the Year award, following in the footsteps of pitcher Natsuki Takeuchi last year. Watanabe Satoshi said with shining eyes, "I want to win it! I've been given so many at-bats and opportunities since my first year, and if I'm in a position to win it, I want to win it."
