Lotte's new manager, Saburo (49), held an inauguration press conference at Zozo on the 8th. He signed a multi-year contract and number 86. The first Japanese manager in history to have a registered name in katakana, Saburo has warned that he will be strict this fall and next spring, saying that the training camp will be "like the Showa era" in order to help the team recover from their last-place finish. He has already taken an active role, including taking charge of practice.

The dream he had envisioned took on a new shape and began to move forward. When he heard the announcement that Saburo would be taking over as manager of the Lotte Marines, a memory from 11 years ago flashed through his mind. It was May 2014, and he had the opportunity to have dinner with him for the first time. He had been overwhelmed by the aura he exuded since he had been in charge the previous year, but he remained nervous even during the meal, and he hardly remembers what we talked about. However, the one thing he remembers clearly is what he said when he first spoke of his dreams after retirement: "I want to become a GM someday and make the team stronger." At the time, he had envisioned becoming head of the organization and making Lotte the best in Japan.

Of course, I could imagine him smartly dressed in a suit and taking on a key role in the organization, but it's also true that I wanted to see "Manager Saburo" in uniform, fighting passionately with the players as the head of the field. At his retirement game in 2016, he promised the fans, "I have another dream. That is to make The Marines the number one team in Japan. I want to work towards that dream," and what has remained consistent since hearing his dream is his stronger than anyone else's desire to strengthen his beloved team and lead it to the top. I'm looking forward to seeing Lotte battle under Manager Saburo. (Goto Ryota, Lotte reporter in 2013)
