Softbank Hawks 's fifth-round draft pick, infielder Takahashi Takayoshi, currently participating in the team's Miyazaki training camp, was notified on the 12th that he will be promoted from Group B (second team) to Group A (first team). The 24-year-old, originally from JR East, is a third baseman by trade, but has also decided to try his hand at second base. Manager Kokubo commented, "His batting is highly rated by other coaches, and defense is his number one priority. He's apparently never played second base, but it's better to give him a shot at staying on the first team. If he's batting in one position or playing defensive back, he's able to move with such ease that it's hard to believe it's his first time. My assessment so far is that he has potential. If we can make use of his batting, I think it's worth giving him a go." While Takahashi himself was a third baseman during his college days, he also played outfield and second base in his first year as a pro, and secured a permanent spot at second base in his second year.
After practice that day, Takahashi moved into the first-team quarters. "I've only been playing infield since I started working, so I've never played second baseman, but I'm surprised that I've been playing second base since I entered the professional world. If I can stay in the first-team position, I'd like to play anywhere," he said enthusiastically.
