Former Seibu Lions manager Kazuo Matsui (50) joined the Lotte Marines' Miyakonojo camp as a temporary coach on the 5th. He personally took the batting practice and demonstrated how to do it, providing passionate instruction on both offense and defense.

The intense training did not end even at dusk. After the team practice, Matsui took up position at third base. He showed off the same smooth handling of the glove as when he was active. Although he is registered outfielder, he imparted basic techniques to Daito Yamamoto (23), who will be trying out third base this season.

He was pleased to see Yamamoto's eagerness to teach him both in terms of hitting and defense. He explained the purpose of the demonstration, saying, "You'll feel something if you take it together. It's important to watch." He praised the "Showa-style Hell Camp" promoted by PL Gakuen's coach Saburo (49), who is one year younger than him, saying, "It's wonderful. It's all about the numbers." He also mentioned that after going pro, he switched from pitcher to short stop and tried hitting with both hands, saying, "I learned this through practice that turns quantity into quality."

Manager Saburo also paid his respects to Kazuo's efforts, saying, "He was the best, wasn't he? He really is different." The training will continue until the 11th. Yamamoto also said, "I've made a reservation for tomorrow!" as he trains at the "Katsuo School," showing his determination to make securing a regular position a reality. (Kato Hiroshi)
