On the 21st, Softbank announced that pitcher Takehiro Hasegawa underwent "left elbow medial collateral ligament reconstruction surgery" (commonly known as Tommy John surgery) at a hospital in Gunma Prefecture. The surgery was successful and he is expected to return in 10 to 12 months. His chances of pitching this season are now slim.
Hasegawa was transferred from Nippon-Ham in the 2011 offseason active player draft. Last season, he pitched in a career-high 32 games, with a record of 4 wins, 0 losses, 6 hold, and an ERA of 2.02, including his first professional win. He was expected to be a key reliever this season, but he has been in the rehabilitation group since spring training camp.
