Nippon-Ham pitcher Hiromi Ito participated in the fall training camp that began at ESCON on the 31st. He appeared in front of the press for the first time since receiving the Sawamura Award and spoke of his joy at receiving the award.

Regarding the Sawamura Award, Ito said, "I thought it would be a bit tough, so to be honest, I was surprised." This season, he pitched in 27 games, with 14 wins and 6 complete game, a winning percentage of .636, 196 2/3 innings innings pitched, 195 strike out, and ERA of 2.52. The Sawamura Award criteria are 25 appearances, 15 wins, 10 complete game, a winning percentage of .600, 200 innings pitched, 150 strike out, and ERA of 2.50, and he cleared the three criteria of appearances, winning percentage, and strike out. While he fell just short in many categories, he was recognized for being the top innings pitched and complete game games in both leagues.

"Of course I'm happy, but I wasn't able to achieve the numbers I wanted, like 15 or more wins. It's a real honor, but I would like to achieve all of them and win again," he said, setting high ideals.

This is the first time the team has received the award in 18 years since Darvish in 2007. "I'm really happy that I was able to continue to follow in the footsteps of Darvish, who I've always admired, and if I have children, I'd like to tell them that even Ohtani didn't win it," he said with a smile.
