Nippon-Ham Nao Miyanishi pitcher Hisao Miyanishi (40) looked back on his 18th season as a pro, turning 40, in his self-written series "Yuou Maishin" on the 11th. He reaffirmed the importance of conditioning and wrote about his own theory on conditioning. Furthermore, the legendary left-hander, who became the fourth player in history to achieve 900 appearances, declared that he had no intention of setting records. Although not registered as a player, the veteran, who will be accompanying the team in the CS, spoke passionately about his strong desire to be hoisted in celebration by manager Shinjo.
First of all, I was able to achieve the milestone of 900 appearances in the final home game (against Rakuten) on September 23rd. I am filled with gratitude to Manager Shinjo for adding a special touch to my achievement in front of a huge home crowd during our championship race.
Looking back on this season, I personally feel it was a "negative season" that I couldn't quite grasp. My training went smoothly from spring training camp and I got off to a great start at the start of the season. However, as I turned 40, my training methods for the season were a constant process of trial and error. Naturally, it's more difficult to stay in shape than when I was younger. Fatigue accumulated from traveling and other factors, and with each game, I began to feel stiffness in my lower back and various other parts of my body. With more areas requiring attention, how can I maintain my best condition in the limited time I have? The timing of treatment and how I use my time are future challenges. It's not easy to find a training method that suits my body, which changes every year. I was close to grasping some areas, so I'd like to keep that in mind and utilize my various skills going forward.
I often hear the opinion that veterans can make up for their technical weaknesses with their skilled pitch techniques and experience. However, I disagree with this view, as I believe that skills cannot be fully utilized unless one is in good physical condition. There is a saying that goes, "mind, technique, and body," but for me, the order of "mind, body, and technique" fits best. First, you need to be motivated mentally, then you need to be in good physical condition, and finally, your skills can be utilized. This is the same for both young players and veterans. Unless you are in good physical condition, your skills will not be utilized. This year has been a time when I have been searching for a conditioning method that suits me as a 40-year-old, and it has made me realize once again the importance of conditioning.
A new battle has begun to become the best in Japan. During my 18 years as a professional, I have had the honor of lifting up past managers Nashida (who won the league championship in 2009) and Kuriyama (who won the league championship in 2012, and both the league championship and Japan championship in 2016). Right now, my greatest desire is to lift up Manager Shinjo in celebration. I am not concerned with records for the number of hold or the number of appearances. My final goal as an active player is to lift up my boss, who has given me experiences that no other manager has had the opportunity to have, and who has given me a new perspective baseball. For the sake of my best teammates and the fans who support me, I will continue to wave my arms until the moment of joy. (Miyanishi Hisao)
