As practice games and exhibition games begin in the latter half of February, anticipation for the start of the season is building. For Pacific League fans who can't wait for the season to begin, Pacific League Insight introduces players to watch for the 2026 season. This time, we're looking at Takayoshi Yamamura Saitama Seibu Lions.
Takayoshi Yamamura
He joined Saitama Seibu Lions as the third pick in the 2020 draft from Tokai University Sagami High School. This is his sixth season as a young slugger.
Yamamura, who had made his presence felt in his first year with the farm team, hitting six Home Run, made his first-team debut in 2023, his third year after graduating from high school, when Sosuke Genda was injured in the WBC. He made his first starting line-up debut as the seventh batter and short stop, but was unable to produce results in two games, going hit in seven At Bat with four struck out, and was removed from the roster.
That year, he played in 85 games for the farm team, batting .258 Home Run. He was promoted in October, and recorded his first professional hit and Home Run in a game against Chiba Lotte Marines on the 2nd. The following day, on the 3rd, he hit a massive 2-run home run, making it his second consecutive game. He left a strong impression at the end of the season.
2024 was a year that was expected to be a breakout year, but he was sidelined with an injury in April. He rejoined the team in June and was briefly assigned to the number four position, but finished the season with a batting average of .219 and Home Run. However, he showed his competitive spirit with a batting average of .311 in scoring position. Despite appearing in 58 games, he had 23 RBI, fourth on the team, and shone as a promising young player in a lineup that was struggling with a lack of hitting power.
Although he missed the opening day of the 2025 season, he played in a career-high 71 games. Immediately after his promotion, he recorded a batting average of .289 in June, but was removed from the roster due to poor performance in July. He returned in mid-August and recorded a batting average of .301 Home Run 12 RBI in September. His performance proved to be a stepping stone for his future.
Saitama Seibu Lions is expected to see intensifying competition for positions in the 2026 season. Yamamura has demonstrated his natural batting ability since early spring, and could he make further strides to become a core player in the batting lineup?
