Softbank Hawks 's starting pitcher, Stewart, faltered in the bottom of the fifth inning with the score 6-0. With no outs and a runner on second base, he gave up a two-run Walk to pinch hitter Yoshida, then walked Mizuno and Reyes consecutively with one out, and then allowed an RBI single to Kiyomiya before being pulled from the game after 100 pitches. He was on the verge of his fifth win thanks to the large offensive support from his teammates, but he was unable to fulfill his role as a starting pitcher.

Tsumori, the second pitcher, gave up a single to left field hit to the next batter, Martinez, putting himself in a jam with one out bases loaded, but he struck out Manami and Nomura closer to preserve the three-run lead.

Stewart commented through his press office, "I'd like to thank the fielder for their support from the early innings, which made it easier for me to pitch. I was able to pitch tenaciously until the fourth inning and I think I was able to attack effectively. I'm sorry that I had to leave the game so early despite having six runs of support. I'll be cheering from the bench for the team to win." This was his ninth start of the season, and he has only managed to pitch six innings once, highlighting his stamina issues.
