Saitama Seibu Lions announced that it has signed contracts for next season with Wingenter pitcher and Kanario.

Wingenter pitcher, now in his second season in Japan, got off to a slow start due to a right shoulder injury, but has delivered strong relief appearances since his first outing on June 11, setting a new NPB record on August 11 with 19 consecutive hold. He extended the record the following day, August 12, by recording another hold.

Koji Hiroike, the team’s General Manager, said, “Since returning to the first team in June, Wingenter pitcher has made an immeasurable contribution to the team. In addition to his high strike out ability, he has been able to control the quality of the batted ball—such as by increasing his groundball rate this year—and his pitch has become more consistent. His wonderful character, always acting The Lions for his teammates and fans, is also very appealing.“I’m truly delighted that we’ll be able to compete together again next year. I hope he maintains his physical condition and continues to contribute to The Lions ’s win,” he said in his assessment.

Kanario, who joined the team this season, has remained with the first team since the start of the season, posting strong numbers in May with a .322 batting average, 6 Home Run, and an OPS of .922. So far this season, he has appeared in 99 games, recording a .244 batting average, 9 Home Run, and 37 RBI.

Regarding Kanario, Mr. Hiroike commented, “While his overall numbers are a bit underwhelming, he really showed his true potential in May and gave the team’s standings a huge boost. He’s a player full of appeal—from the speed of his hits when he makes solid contact to his dynamic base running and his strong natural throwing arm.He’s young and physically strong, and since he’s able to practice while continuing to play in games, I believe he still has plenty of room to grow. I’m truly delighted that we’ll be able to compete alongside Kanario—who is beloved by his teammates for his dedicated attitude—again next year. I hope he’ll fully unleash his abundant talent and shine at ground.”
