In the bottom of the 8th inning, with the score 5-1 and bases loaded loaded with no outs, Nippon-Ham 's Ren Ren Fukushima gave up grand slam to Softbank Hawks 's Kurihara, who hit his league-leading 33rd home run, tying the game.

Fukushima, the third pitcher to take the mound for the second consecutive day, struggled with his control, walking the leadoff batter Masaki, giving up Walk single to Shuto, and another walk to Kondo. On the Walk to Kurihara, after two balls, Kurihara hit a perfect shot that landed in the middle of the second deck in right field. Fukushima crouched down, unable to lift his head. The game was tied again with that one swing, and the stadium erupted in chaos.

This tying goal erased Yamazaki's chances of a sixth win, and also prevented Maeda Yu from suffering his first loss of the season.
