Orix Buffaloes pitcher Sean Hjelle was pulled from the game after 6 innings, having given up 6 hit 4 runs (3 earned), while striking strike out 7. In the first inning, he gave up a double to Fujiwara, the leadoff doble, and then a two-run homer to Yamaguchi with two outs and a runner on third, giving up the first run of the game.

Even so, he bounced back from the second inning onward, retiring inning all three batters in a row through the fourth. In the tied fifth inning, Ueda hit a doble over the field with one out, but Yamazaki grounded out to the pitcher and Fujiwara to fly out to shortstop, preventing the game from taking the lead.

In the sixth inning, Nishikawa led off with an infield hit to third base, followed by a double to left doble by Yasuda, putting the team in a dangerous situation with no outs and runners on second and third.
