Rakuten Eagles won the first game of their series against Seibu Lions, marking their fourth four-game winning streak of the season.
Shigenaga (Chuo University), the third-round draft pick who starting line-up at third base and batted seventh, hit a game-winning RBI single to left field off Seibu Lions 's hit in the seventh inning, marking his first professional RBI and contributing to win.
In his 12th professional at-bat, he delivered the long-awaited hit that secured win, and after the game, he stood on the winner's podium for the first time. Having been registered as a player and immediately starting in starting line-up, he delivered results and said, "I went into this game feeling like it was my last chance. It feels amazing!"
However, after hitting a timely single in the seventh inning, he celebrated so much that his foot almost left first base. He was tagged by Nevin who received the throw back, and although he was initially ruled safe, the play was reviewed after a request from Seibu Lions. The call did not change, but he reflected, "When I was tagged, I thought, 'Seriously?!' It's always been like this; after something good happens, I can't seem to end it on a good note. I want to be more careful from now on," and he tightened his resolve.
Director Yoshii chuckled, "He should have focused properly at that point. But then he got too excited. That was a bit of a no-no. I think his mother will be angry with him when he gets home. He needs to reflect on it."
