◆ Pacific League Seibu Lions 4X-Nippon-Ham (26th, Belluna Dome)
Seibu Lions manager Nishiguchi explained the condition of outfielder Shinya Hasegawa who was replaced by a pinch runner in the 7th inning, saying, "We're still not sure. He's probably already been to the hospital; there's a clinic nearby."
Hasegawa started the game as the third batter and center fielder. In the bottom of the seventh inning, with two outs and runners on first and second base, in his fourth at-bat, on the fifth pitch of a 2-2 count, he hit a 135 km/h slider from opposing starter Ito, and the ball hit him directly in the top of his left foot, causing him to wince in pain. A trainer rushed to his side, but after a few minutes' delay, he returned to the plate.
However, after full count went full, the ball hit him again in the same spot. Hasegawa crouched down on the spot and was unable to stand for a long time. After doing some light running, he returned to the batter's box and, with sheer determination, drew a walk, which led to Nevin's Walk-tying RBI single. However, he was limping and could not walk properly to first base. Nishikawa was sent in as a pinch runner.
