In the bottom of the ninth inning on the 23rd, with two outs, Orix Buffaloes pitcher Machado's fourth pitch, a fastball, hit him directly in the face. He collapsed and was unable to move, and was carried off on a stretcher while manager Kokubo and other coaches watched. He was then transported by ambulance with his neck and head immobilized. After the game, manager Kokubo said, "It hit him squarely. We had no choice but to take him to the hospital immediately by ambulance."
