◆ Pacific League Rakuten Eagles 8-4 Seibu Lions (23rd, Yamagata City)
League leaders Seibu suffered their first consecutive losses in about a month, since May 20th and 22nd, with pitchers Winans and Seibu Lions giving up a total of eight runs. This was their first series loss in 16 series, since the series against Nippon-Ham from April 28th to 30th (at Belluna Dome).
Starting pitcher Allan Winans pitched five innings, strike out six, allowing nine hit and two Walk, and giving up five runs, his runs performance since coming to Japan. He allowed runners in the first inning but kept the score at 0. In the second inning, he had runner on first and second with one out but managed to escape without giving up any runs.
However, in the third inning, with a two-run lead, they loaded the bases with one bases loaded after two hit and one Walk, and then gave up a two-run single to center field to tie the game to cleanup hitter McCusker. With two outs and runners on first and second, they allowed a go-ahead two-doble to left field to Murabayashi, giving up four runs in one inning. In the fifth inning, with one out, they gave up a solo Home Run to McCusker that landed in the top deck of the left field stands.
Hamaya, who came in as the second bases loaded in the sixth inning, loaded Walk with one out due to a fielding error by his teammates, and then walked Asamura, forcing in a run. With the bases loaded loaded and two Walk, he walked Watanabe again, forcing in another run, and then allowed the runner on third to score on a balk during Murabayashi's at-bat. After walking Murabayashi again, loading the bases with Walk bases loaded once more, he finally got the third out by getting Horiuchi to hit a ground ball to the pitcher, but he had thrown 40 pitches and given up 3 runs.
In the second inning, with one out and a runner on first base, Ishii hit a timely doble to right-center field to score the first run. In the second inning, with one out and a runner on second base, Hasegawa hit doble down the left field line to add another run.
In the seventh inning, with the team trailing by six runs, Canario hit an RBI single to left field with no outs and runners on second and third, and then another run was added on a ground ball to third base by Kishi with one out. However, the comeback ended there.
The team played a day game at Kyocera Dome from 1pm on the 21st before returning to Tokyo. On the 22nd, they played a game at Tokyo Dome from 6pm, using all nine pitcher in a 12-inning game that extra inning 4 hours and 38 minutes. On the 23rd, they traveled to Yamagata in the morning for a night game starting at 6pm, a grueling schedule that led to a series of losses that only increased their fatigue.
