Seibu Lions starting pitcher, Chihiro Sumida earned his sixth win of the season with a runs nine-inning streak, allowing only three hit and two Walk. This was his second shutout game victory of the season.

"I felt different than usual even during catch practice, and I wasn't in top form before the game," he said, but despite not being in his best form, he gave up a single to Nishikawa, the leadoff hit in the first inning, and then retired a total of three batters in just eight pitches. From there, he continued to pitch without hit no walk until the sixth inning.

In the seventh inning with two outs, he gave up his first Walk of the day to Ota, but then shut down the subsequent batters. In the ninth inning, he gave up two hit, and although he fell just short of a near-perfect game and shutout game with under 100 pitches, he still delivered a spectacular pitch. "I was able to attack aggressively until the very end. I'm glad I was able to improve as the game went on," he said, wiping away the sweat from his brow.
