Orix Buffaloes held a game against Seibu Lions as a sponsored match, "Super Mario Bros. 40th Anniversary x 12 Professional baseball Teams," to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the release of the Family Computer game "Super Mario Bros." Prior to the game, Mario appeared to throw out the first pitch. When he took mound, Jerry, a 213cm right-handed pitcher whose trademark is the same mustache as Mario, and closer Machado also appeared on ground.

With Jerry folding his long legs to act as catcher, Machado stepped up to the right-handed batter's box. Mario's best pitch unfortunately bounce before reaching the plate, but he was still met with loud applause.
