Softbank Hawks 's opening day pitcher, Uwasawa, also served as the opening day pitcher in 2019 and 2021 while playing for Nippon-Ham.
Since the establishment of the two-league system in 1950, there have been 14 pitchers who have served as opening day pitcher for two or more teams in the same league. However, only two of them have pitched in the opening game for their former team: Masakazu Kaneda (Giants), who pitched against the Atoms (Kokutetsu) in 1969, and Kimiyasu Kudo (Daiei), who pitched against Seibu Lions in 1995.
Neither Kaneda nor Kudo received a win or loss decision. Last year, Uwasawa only played one game against Nippon-Ham on May 1st, and losing pitcher. Will he get his first win against his former team in the opening game?
