Softbank 's Yuto Akihiro

Softbank Hawks Yuto Akihiro infielder Akihiro (23) made a strong case for a spot on the opening day roster after hitting two hit in a practice game at the Miyazaki training camp on the 19th. He is currently working on a new batting form this season, which involves lifting his right leg to time his swing, with an eye on hitting for power. The 200cm tall rising star made his presence felt in the third practice game.

As the Whites' fifth batter and first baseman, he hit a satisfying single to right field off of Haru Matsumoto in his first at-bat. In his second at-bat, he hit a single to center field off of Oe, who also joined the team from The Giants in a trade midway through last season. Roman Ho, who produced results against lefties, said, "The things I've been practicing since my personal training are gradually showing results." He plans to continue swinging the bat alongside his mentor, Yamakawa, who has vowed to continue training hard even after the season begins.

Manager Kokubo is so excited about the prospect that he's already planning to use Ihine as a pinch runner and defense substitute once Akihiro is ready to play first base. (Koichiro Shimao)
