Seibu Lions Lions pitcher Chihiro Sumida (26) served as a batting pitcher for the second time at the Nango Camp on the 12th. He threw 46 pitches, including breaking ball, against Hasegawa and Watanabe. His fastest fastball was measured at 148 km/h, highlighting his excellent condition.
"I was a little tired, and my body felt a lot harder than it did last time (on the 6th), but I was able to throw the ball well and I think I was able to pitch without taking it easy. I've never been this tired and the ball was moving so well before. I'd like to think that maybe I've improved a bit in that regard."
He will be listed as a reserve pitcher for Samurai Japan at the WBC in March. How does that feel?
"Well, I think it's a more difficult position than being a member of the team. I have to prepare myself to be able to contribute even if I'm called upon, while keeping the season in mind. I think it's the most difficult."
Samurai Japan's pitcher also had to withdraw due to injury, so there is a possibility that they will be called up in the future.
"When I'm called, I think I'll switch on. I think I've made the necessary preparations. It's a big responsibility, so I think I'll switch on."
He will be using NPB balls for practice during camp, but he also makes sure to prepare well, saying, "I always have MLB balls in my room." He will turn all of his experiences into strength and push forward to the start of his fifth season. (Kato Hiroshi)
