Nippon-Ham pitcher Fukuya Yamazaki (33) entered bullpen for the second time during the training camp on the 4th. During the training camp, he put aside his "two-way" style and focused on improving the power of pitcher fastball, aiming to break his own personal best by hitting over 150 km/h.
On this day, he threw 40 straight pitches, all straight, and said, "My straight pitch is good. It's better than in bullpen last year. It's 3-4 km/h faster. It's powerful. I'm conscious of the momentum of the ball," showing satisfaction with his improved straight pitch. "The more I use my straight pitch, the more changes I can make. I'm getting older, so I really want to throw a straight pitch one more time. I want to go to my max. I want to go 150 km/h. That's my goal, so I want to throw it," he said, aiming to break his own personal best in his 34-year-old season.
He was transferred to reliever towards the end of last season. He also pitched in relief in the final S of the CS against Softbank Hawks, and his fastball reached 147 km/h, proving to be a success. "From around the end of last season, I started practicing a lot of things as reliever, and I feel like my fastball is improving little by little now because I've been continuing to do that," he said, linking his experience as reliever from last season to this season.
Last season, he was scouted by manager Shinjo and participated in hitter drills such as free batting practice, but this camp he has decided to "put batting on hold" and will focus solely on pitcher. First and foremost, he aims to achieve career-high statistics as pitcher.
