It was decided on the 5th that Nippon-Ham pitcher Taisho Tamai and outfielder Haruki Nishikawa will remain with the team next season without exercising their free agent rights. The 34-year-old duo, born in the same year, will be active on the ground as they aim for their first league championship in 11 years.
The two players, who attended a press conference at Es Con Field where the autumn camp is being held, each expressed their thoughts. Tamai, who was limited to only 12 appearances this year, explained his reason for deciding to stay without exercising his rights, saying, 'I am not in a position to say such things.' Reflecting on the result of having the fewest appearances in his career, he strengthened his resolve for a comeback, stating, 'Since things weren't very good this year, I have a strong desire to show what I can do next year.'
Nishikawa, who returned to Nippon-Ham this season for the first time in five years, had no intention of playing for another team, stating, 'Ever since I returned to The Fighters, I have intended to finish my career here.' Instead, reflecting on his limited appearances in only 25 games—the fewest in his professional career—he expressed gratitude to the club, saying, 'Despite not producing good results, they offered me a contract. I am truly grateful, and I also feel a sense of apology.'
In his professional career, he has 1,438 hits and 345 stolen bases. Looking ahead to next season, Nishikawa said, 'I want to combine the good parts of this year with the good things I have done so far. I hope to achieve milestones like 350 stolen bases and 1,500 hits.' He intends to contribute to the team's win through his results.
