SMBC Japan Series 2026 Game 4: Softbank Hawks 4-2 DeNA (28th, Mizuho PayPay Dome)
Softbank Hawks outfielder Tomoya Masaki was named the MVP of the SMBC Japan Series 2026. In this series, he recorded a hit in all four games, finishing with a .438 batting average, 2 Home Runs, and 2 RBIs. During the regular season, he appeared in a career-high 101 games and established himself as the fixed leadoff hitter with a performance of a .274 batting average, 28 Home Runs, and 59 RBIs. Last season, he experienced a period of absence due to a subluxation of his left shoulder. Having overcome his injury to become the key figure in securing consecutive Japan Series titles, the right-handed leadoff man reflected with deep emotion, saying, "Compared to when I was injured last year, I couldn't have imagined performing like this this year. However, I feel that all the hard work I put in since my rehabilitation last year was truly worth it."
Below is the full text of the MVP interview.
—Current feelings
It was a series of truly difficult matches, but I am happy to think that I was able to contribute even just a little bit.
- Recorded a hit in all four games, including two Home Runs. Yesterday, you played a key role with a walk-off blast.
However, my form dropped a bit toward the end of the season, so I started this feeling quite anxious. I am truly glad that, thanks to the support of so many people, I was able to get back on track.
—Who is the person you would most like to express your gratitude to?
No, but the reason my batting form improved was truly thanks to Coach Hasegawa and Mr. Kondo. I was able to get a hit on this stage because of them.
—A word of gratitude
"thank you"
—Hit 28 Home Runs in the regular season and performed exceptionally well in the postseason.
No, really, compared to when I was injured last year—compared to that time—I couldn't have imagined that I would be performing like this this year. But looking back, I truly feel that all the hard work I put into my rehabilitation since last year was worth it.
—What kind of team is this year's team?
I was the first to start this year, and I had such amazing seniors behind me. I was able to make it this far simply by focusing on passing the baton to them, so I am truly grateful to my seniors.
— A message to the fans
Thank you for your support over the past year. This season is coming to an end, but I will do my best to grow and return even stronger. Thank you very much.
