Orix Buffaloes catcher Yuma Tongu (29) renewed his determination for a comeback on the 7th. In July, he underwent major surgery, including reconstruction of the medial meniscus of his right knee, a procedure with no precedent for a return to professional baseball. He was notified by the club that his roster contract for next season would not be renewed. It is expected that he will be offered a developmental contract. The 2023 leading hitter looked toward the future with a positive mindset.
"The team has been very understanding, and many people are supporting me. I want to work hard every day with the firm belief that I will definitely make a comeback." He maintains his strength by focusing on his right leg, left leg, and upper body on different days, completing one set every three days. "I just have to steadily do what needs to be done. That's all I can do," he said with determination.
Continuing his rehabilitation based in Maishima, Osaka, he is now able to swing a bat within a range that does not put a burden on his right knee. Although it will be a long and steep road, he repeatedly said, "I want to create a precedent for a comeback." He envisions returning to competition next summer. There is no hesitation or doubt.
