The Orix Buffaloes announced on the 5th that they have notified developmental infielder Kazuya Katsuki that they will not be renewing his player contract for the next season. He stated, "I have been with the Orix Buffaloes for three years, and I have nothing but feelings of gratitude."
He joined Lotte as the 5th draft pick in 2014 from Osaka Toin and was traded to The Giants in the middle of the 2020 season in exchange for Hirokazu Sawamura. In 2021, he appeared in a career-high 39 games and hit 3 Home Runs, but he was released after the 2023 season. He joined the Orix Buffaloes under a developmental contract starting in 2024, and in this season, his third year with the team, he recorded a .310 batting average and 4 RBI in 41 farm league games. However, he did not achieve his goal of being promoted to the active roster.
He expressed his feelings, saying, "I wanted to play for the first team under a standard contract, but spending time with the younger players on the farm team was a very enjoyable time. These three years allowed me to grow." Regarding playing with Tomoya Mori, his senior by one year in high school, he reflected, "It was a great time being able to wear the same uniform, practice together, and do batting practice together at camp. I wanted to play on the first team with him, but I have nothing but feelings of gratitude."
Regarding his future, he expressed his intention to retire from active play, saying, "I have made up my mind. Honestly, I have given it my all." Reflecting on his 12-year professional baseball career, he said, "I joined the Lotte Marines and learned about etiquette and baseball while I was young, then went to the Giants, and finally came to the Orix Buffaloes. I truly enjoyed my time at every club, and they gave me great experiences. They are nothing but assets to me."
