ソフトバンクは３０日、「ＦＵＫＵＯＫＡ ＯＨ ＳＡＤＡＨＡＲＵ ＬＥＧＡＣＹ ＰＲＯＪＥＣＴ」―【８９】から始まる、ホークスの文化を次の世代へ―の始動を発表した。福岡市内の王貞治ベースボールミュージアムで発足会見が行われ、新企画の発起人の１人でもある城島健司ＣＢＯが出席。監督と選手として共に戦った経験もあり「野球にこだわらず、スポーツしている子どもたちにもしっかり受け継いでいきたい」と文化の継承を明かした。
現在は球団会長を務めている王さんは、１９９５年にダイエー（現ソフトバンク）監督に就任し、０８年まで１４年間指揮を執った。９５年にダイエー入りした城島ＣＢＯにとってはプロ入り後初の監督が王さんだった。「鳥が最初に見たものを親と思う、という。プロ野球人として初めてのおやじ、監督が王貞治だったというのがすごくラッキー。野球のいろは、プロ野球選手としてのいろは、男としてのいろはは全部、王貞治に教えてもらった」と尊敬の言葉が止まらなかった。
現在は会長、ＣＢＯという立場で球団の発展について意見を交わすが「いまだに怖いです（笑）。やっぱりおやじは何歳になっても怖いです」と苦笑い。現役時代は選手として偉大さを感じ、今は「会長は（当時）監督をしながら、僕の仕事も広報活動も、１人で何役もされてたんだと今つくづく思う。改めて王貞治の偉大さというのを最近痛感してます」と感服の様子だった。
