Lotte's Naoya Masuda held a public training session at Zozo Marine Stadium on the 27th.
Last season, he pitched in just 22 games, his lowest total since turning pro, with a record of 1 win, 4 losses, 2 hold, 5 saves, and ERA of 4.35, a disappointing year. After the regular season ended, he said, "I'm trying to change my approach. I'm keeping my running the same, but increasing my training a little. I've had a bad start over the past two years, so my shoulders and elbows are developing slowly. I started catch early and am working out slowly." He participated in fall practice at Zozo Marine Stadium and the Miyakonojo fall camp. He has made major changes from his previous approach, including incorporating weight training in earnest, and is working out nonstop even during the off-season.
In an interview on October 27 last year, he said, "I would like to be able to closer in a straight line, sinker and slider, but anyway, it is straight. I wonder what kind of fastball they are looking for at this point in time.
"fastball when I'm in good form. I think it would be good if I can throw a ball that has a hoppy quality and that floats up from a low release point. So far, it's coming out just as I imagined, so I'll have high hopes for myself."
When asked what specific aspects he expects from himself, he showed confidence, saying, "I was completely terrible last year, so I'm looking forward to improving in all areas."
Regarding his current condition, he said, "I think it's a lot better than last year.Last year I wasn't in good shape to throw, but this year I've been throwing in November and December of last year, so the balls I'm throwing are better than when I first started, and I think I'm in a state where I can go into bullpen and throw at any time."He is feeling confident so far.
As of the end of 2024, he had recorded 243 saves, and entered the 2025 season just seven saves away from reaching 250, one of the conditions for joining the Hall of Fame, but he only managed five saves and was unable to achieve this milestone. "I think everyone is keeping an eye on me, so I want to achieve it quickly and practice quietly, so I'll do my best to achieve it as soon as possible," he said enthusiastically.
number 52 has been a pillar of bullpen for many years. This season, I hope he will shine once again on the first team stage and prove with results that we still need Masuda's strength.
