Seibu Lions announced that it has signed a development player contract for this season with Juan Corniel (23), a switch-hitting infielder from the Dominican Republic.
Through the team, Corniel commented, "I am very honored to have the opportunity to play as a member of The Lions. I am truly grateful to the team for giving me this opportunity. I will learn a lot from my teammates and coaches and do my best to contribute to the team's win. I will also work hard to become a player that the fans can trust."
Hiroike, the team's general manager, expressed his expectations, saying, "He is a switch-hitting infielder with excellent athletic ability and a strong arm. He specializes in short stop and second baseman and is a player with outstanding defense ability. His batting is characterized by his sharp hits that go between fielder. On the other hand, he needs to improve the consistency of his batting, but we believe that if he improves his technique a little, he has the potential to make a big leap. He has been steadily improving, having played in AAA last year, and we decided to acquire him after hearing from scouts that he is 'just one step away from making a big leap.' We will train him thoroughly."
