Orix Buffaloes announced on May 5 that Atsuya Kogita pitcher underwent surgery to remove a bone fragment from his right elbow at a hospital in Osaka City. He is scheduled to undergo rehabilitation and other measures while checking the condition of the affected area.
He underwent reconstruction of the medial collateral ligament (commonly known as Tommy John surgery) in his right elbow in April, and made the decision to undergo surgery to relieve the discomfort he had been complaining about during rehabilitation. After discussing the matter with the team, he chose to undergo a complete recovery without conservative treatment.
This season, his fourth year as a pro, is the first time he has not pitched in the first team, and he re-signed as a development player on November 22nd. He has previously said, "I'll do what I have to do and wait until I'm in good shape. I'll just keep working steadily," and after a certain period of no-throwing, he plans to resume pitch practice during the Miyazaki training camp in February next year. In 2023, he pitched in 38 games, posting a record of 4 wins and 0 losses with ERA of 2.19. Although he will not be ready for the start of next season, he is making progress with the aim of returning to action from April onwards.
