On the 30th, Softbank manager Hiroki Kokubo (54) revealed that he has instructed Imamiya to prepare to play multiple positions. The plan is to use the stalwart shortstop at second base, third base, and first base as well. The manager, who returned to his hometown of Wakayama for the "Hiroki Kokubo Little League baseball Tournament" which he is hosting, expressed his joy at the team's Japan championship and said, "My mind is now focused on next season."
In his second year in 2011, Imamiya made 11 appearances as a pinch hitter at first base, but since 2012, he has played at defense in all 1,575 games. His five-time Golden Glove Award-winning defense remains strong as he enters his 17th season. Even so, the manager decided to "judgmentally increase the team's chances of winning." While his primary position is shortstop, the move will broaden the team's tactical options, including mid-game defense changes. Despite a string of injuries this season, including for Imamiya, the team has been driven to the top by the emergence of young players. Just hours after clinching the Japan Series crown, Imamiya declared, "We'll break it once and for all," leaving every possibility open for next season.
Nomura made a particularly big leap at shortstop. He also told Imamiya, "Of course you'll compete at shortstop. Let's bloom at short stop once more." At the same time, he also made it clear that "I'll be competing with Isami Nomura." Yanagida and Yanagimachi will also compete in left field, and the new team will be built with a serious match between proven veterans and young players. (Ando Osamu)
